RAIN SOMEWHERE

after billy collins

Billy Collins wrote about rain in Portugal

but I have never seen the rain falling in Portugal or Hong Kong 

I have seen it fall in Central American mountains, Paris, Hamburg, and London

tropical downpours or April showers as they always come,

but I am sure its not like those showers in Portugal

since it's a mystery to me, I create an image of a man with a huge umbrella

standing in a plaza in Lisbon watching the day turn rather dark then countless drops come

he stands and composes a song for his lost dog or lover,

he does not move, he just stands and hums

then I remember that I’m not sure Lisbon has any plazas.

And I go on writing out the story of my mystery man

he walks happily letting the downpour fall around his feet,

and he does have a dog who comes running up to him

and he says ‘you silly pup’ in Portuguese and picks the dog up

now they are both wet.
