BEACH POEM NUMBER TWO

SAN FRANCISCO BEACH FRAGMENTS

Ocean Beach again
walking on sand
the sea at my feet
what was it I was looking for?

called back by some otherness
in the salt air
close my eyes, breathing out a prayer
for friends, family, our passing world

did I pick up a forgotten word
among crab shells?
was there some memory I left by these stones
the sea washed over a minute ago?

I don’t know
I walk a bit more,
stopping to day-dream
closing my eyes again
deep breaths
search within a search
there’s nothing left of the past
sand covers up names on the sand
our home by the sea was sold

I spin around twice
open my eyes look at
other stones waiting for the sea to cover them
that eternal splash
that baptism…
