Two More Poems

VIEWS AND SIGHTS
3rd.july.2017

We
stood at the shore of the Hudson
Brooklyn behind us Manhattan before us
buildings rising out of their long history
“Manifest Destiny” and lights and sights, and sounds
echoing ‘if you it make here why go anywhere else?’

Todd
and I and his son said nothing
on that sunny day a few years ago,
simply watched the view of New York City
in all its condensed chaos and life and movement.

What
could be said, except ‘time for lunch kids’
we walked on, laughing, and chatting.

For
me it was the closure of one life
start of another somewhere West
where other dreams live
in foggy cool and The Golden Gate.

COFFEE

I can never stop
writing about you
all these years you’ve been with me
writing at my desk
smoking cigarettes, when I smoked, with lovers and friends
watching me exorcise melancholy from my soul
walking wintry  streets in London, New York, Berlin
meeting up with the ghosts
of Spender, Auden, and MacNeice,
yes, you’ve been there
not like a friend, but an uncle
a serious uncle, watchful, ready to say something

at the right moment, something brilliantly funny.
